PULSE FIELD DAY SHOWS OFF THE WIDE CHOICE OF COMBINING PEA VARIETIES AVAILABLE AND IN PROSPECT FOR GROWERS

Speaking at the PGRO Pulse Field Day at Stubton, Lincolnshire, Chris Guest, Managing Director of LSPB (LS Plant Breeding Ltd), applauded the wide range of Descriptive List (DL) and Candidate pulse varieties on trial there.

“We were impressed by the large number of combining pea varieties on show that are either currently on the PGRO DL or are DL Candidates,” he commented. “It demonstrates the work that all breeders are putting into the pulse crop – and we were especially pleased how well our own pea varieties are looking in trials.”

“Bluetime is LSPB’s leading green pea variety and is in high demand following its top yields in PGRO trials over the last four years.

“Our new marrowfat pea, Akooma, which was newly added to the PGRO DL for 2021, was 11% above the next highest variety, and is well-placed to gain processor acceptance to add to its yield and agronomic attractions for growers.

“Our wide range of our combining peas on the current PGRO DL bring growers an extensive choice varieties with differing agronomic characters and market options including Orchestra yellow pea as well as Stroma, Greenwich, Croft and Blueman green peas.

“Carrington green pea, which is our PGRO DL candidate, looks good in this year’s trials to follow up its top place in National List trials last season. We believe it is certainly worth keeping an eye on for next season.”

“As the saying – almost – goes, ‘the proof of the pea pudding is in the eating’, so we look forward to seeing PGRO DL trials results for all our varieties this autumn – along with the reactions from growers, seed trade and end users,” adds Chris.
