THE LATEST AHDB RECOMMENDED LISTS FEATURES NEWLY-ADDED FLEMMING WINTER OILSEED RAPE TO JOIN LSPB’S CURRENT RECOMMENDED VARIETIES – ALONG WITH HIGH YIELDING WPB ESCAPE ON THE SPRING WHEAT RL

Chris Guest, LS Plant Breeding Ltd (LSPB) Managing Director comments: “Flemming is a new  Recommendation by AHDB for the E/W region in 2022/23. It has high resistance to Stem canker from a new major Phoma resistance gene called RlmS and is also resistant to TuYV (Turnip Yellows Virus). It has a high gross output, good stem stiffness and resistance to lodging.

“Flemming joins our other AHDB Recommended varieties – Respect with the RlmS Phoma resistance gene, clubroot resistant Crome and Croozer – and Resort, the company’s HEAR (high erucic acid) variety.

“On the Spring wheat RL, WPB Escape continues as a very high yielding Hard Group 4 variety that is early ripening with very good disease resistance.”

WINTER OILSEED RAPE

Newly Added to RL  Flemming has high seed yield combined with high oil content, good stem stiffness and resistance to lodging to add to its high resistance to light leaf spot. The RlmS and TuYV stacked genes give high resistance to Stem canker and Turnip Yellows Virus.

Respect is a restored hybrid with a Recommendation by AHDB for the E/W region in 2022/23. It has a high gross output with high resistance to Stem canker from the new major Phoma resistance gene RlmS. It has good stem stiffness and resistance to lodging.

The RL also highlights the continuing important place for growers occupied by LSPB’s clubroot resistant varieties Crome and Croozer. These are restored hybrids with Specific Recommendation (Sp) for the UK (Crome), and E/W Region (Croozer), for growing on land infected with common strains of clubroot.

Croozer also has a high gross output is early flowering with good stem stiffness and very good resistance to Stem canker.

Resort is the only high erucic acid (HEAR) variety on the AHDB Described List, fulfilling a market need for specialised use in industrial processes. HEAR varieties can potentially offer considerable premiums over conventional double low varieties. It is an early flowering variety with high stem stiffness and resistance to lodging.

SPRING WHEAT

WPB Escape, bred by Wiersum Plant Breeding with LSPB as the UK agent, is a Hard Group 4 spring wheat on the AHDB Recommended List for spring sowing 2022. It is a very high yielding variety that is early ripening with very good disease resistance.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

Chris Guest adds, ”Our oilseed rape breeding programme has seen the introduction of RlmS and TuYV genes. And we have three new varieties – Turing, Murray and Vegas – coming to the market shortly. In addition, we will have further varieties from the wheat breeding programmes of our international partners.”
